She was one of the first in Europe to grasp the principles of the new science of statistics and to apply them to military—and later civilian—hospitals. 3 , 4 In 1907, she was the first woman to be awarded the Order of Merit. WebFlorence Nightingale is acknowledged for bringing attention to sanitation and public health in military hospitals and other caregiving facilities (Fee & Garofalo, 2010; Kelly, 2012; Lee et al., 2013). Nightingale’s Environmental Theory of Nursing is one of her most well known contributions to nursing theories (Zborowsky, 2014).
